• Support SB 288 - Support Law Enforcement
    Updated On: May 08, 2014

    Dear Senator:

I am writing on behalf of the 25,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police in Ohio in regards to Senate Bill 288.   Senate Bill 288 was introduced at the urging of the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio.  SB 288 was introduced by Senator Eklund to correct a disparity in terms of the treatment of volunteer and part- time law enforcement officers when compared with volunteer and part-time fire fighters and is strongly supported by the Fraternal Order of Police.  Currently, there is no Ohio death benefit for volunteer and part-time law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty but there is a modest benefit for fire fighters.   Senate Bill 288 simply extends those same benefits to volunteer and part-time law enforcement officers and is modeled verbatim after the volunteer and part-time firefighter’s language.

It appears that Senate Bill 288 will receive its first hearing in the Insurance & Financial Institutions Committee before Chairman Jim Hughes, Vice Chairman Kevin Bacon and Ranking Minority Member Nina Turner in the coming weeks.   The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio is asking each member of the Ohio Senate to sign onto this bill as a co-sponsor.  We know that time is short in this legislative calendar but we also know that this is the kind of legislation that will attract bi-partisan support and can move through the General Assembly without controversy.

This bill is simple, fair and should be one that every legislator can get behind.   We are asking you to co-sponsor this legislation and to help push this legislation through the General Assembly.   This legislation can help protect the families of those who have sworn an oath to protect our communities.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.   Quite frankly, there is no better time than now to support this bill.   Police Officers all across the United States are honoring their fallen brothers and sisters during Police Week and this is your opportunity to do the same.

Please support AND PASS this legislation during the 130th General Assembly.

    Sincerely,

    Jay McDonald

    Fraternal Order of Police President
