FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE OF OHIO STATEMENT
    ON PTSD AND MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Earlier this month the Ohio House of Representatives passed HB 523 to allow for the use of Marijuana as treatment for certain medical conditions. One of the conditions for which medical marijuana would be prescribed is Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD).

The FOP of Ohio has been attempting for a number of years to get legislation that recognizes that PTSD is real, even without an accompanying physical injury. It should be considered a work-related injury for allowed treatment through Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation.  Numerous bills in the Ohio Senate have passed that accomplish this. The latest is SB 5 co-sponsored by Senator Tom Patton and Senator Edna Brown.

Below is a statement from FOP of Ohio President Jay McDonald:

“We appreciate that the Ohio House of Representatives recognizes that PTSD is a real condition that requires treatment.  It’s terribly sad that Ohio Police officers cannot receive worker’s compensation benefits to receive clinical and/or medical help to combat the very real and dire impact of PTSD, but could - under the proposed legislation - get a prescription for medical marijuana.

The FOP of Ohio demands that this be corrected. The language in SB 5 would address this issue and we urge the Ohio Senate to amend this language into HB 523."
