It has been a tough week or so, the murder of FOP Brother Justin Winebrenner of Akron Lodge 7 combined with the turmoil in Missouri and also in Cleveland has been very rough on the law enforcement community.  The law enforcement officers of this state place their lives on the line in service to the community every day and sometimes we are required to pay that ultimate sacrifice to protect our communities.  It seems like we are back in the cycle when law enforcement officers are faced with the unrealistic expectations of being able to solve every community issue with less resources and being expected to do so in the face of life threatening dangers.  When you face those life threatening situations and you are forced to react with deadly force; you will be called vile names, you will be exposed to criminal and civil liability, you will not be supported by your elected leaders, you will have criminal groups cyber-attack you, your family will be placed in harm’s way and the list goes on and on.  Oh, and by the way, your pay and benefits are the cause of the bad economy.

It has been a tough week or so for our profession.  BUT…we still have a lot to be thankful for.

We are thankful for the 325,000 brothers and sisters across the country who stand with us when we are attacked.  We are thankful for the nation’s greatest organization of law enforcement officers who have our backs, the Fraternal Order of Police.

We are thankful for the local leaders who do the hard work of the FOP.  We are thankful for those employees of the FOP who work every day to protect our members.

We are thankful for the thousands upon thousands of citizens who support law enforcement.

We are thankful that we still have members, despite all of the challenges they know they will face, who go to work every day and are willing to place their lives at risk to protect the community.

Most importantly, we are thankful for God’s protection over all of us while we serve!

    Jay McDonald
    Ohio FOP President
