POLICE WEEK ACTIVITIES IN OHIO AND WASHINGTON, DC RECOGNIZE OFFICERS WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE LINE OF DUTY

Columbus, OH – The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio are recognizing National Police Week both in Ohio and nationally.

President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress established national Police Week and the observation of May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962.

Its purpose is to pay special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Ohio FOP President Jay McDonald says it’s more important than ever to take the time to recognize the sacrifice made by law enforcement officers.

“Police-Community relations have had a tumultuous year,” McDonald said. “The reality is that tens of thousands of officers leave their families each and every day with one goal in mind: to keep the community-at-large safe.”

McDonald pointed to statistics that show increasing dangers for officers.

“We can’t allow controversies to cloud the real danger,” he said. “More than 50,000 law enforcement officers were attacked last year alone and the number of police killed by gunfire was up 57 percent over the previous year.”

A memorial event, hosted by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine at the Police Training Academy in London, recognized the 819 recorded Ohio line-of-duty deaths.

The week also features thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converging on Washington, DC. For events, education and the national memorial service on May 15th.
