Ohio Fraternal Order of Police President Jay McDonald released the following statement today:

"This morning Chief Steven Eric Disario responded to reports of an active gunman at a nursing home in Kirkersville, Ohio and was shot by the suspect. He succumbed to the wounds at Licking Memorial Hospital.

His brothers and sisters of the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio join me in mourning this loss, but we also celebrate Chief Disario’s service and quick action to keep others safe from harm.

As we head into National Police Week and commemorate Police Memorial Day on Monday, we ask police everywhere to do what they can to stay safe and to remember Chief Disario as they respond to calls, rushing toward danger to keep their communities safe."

Fraternal Order of Police Licking County Lodge #127 President Mark Emde released the following statement about today's police shooting:

“Steven Eric Disario had been on the job as Chief of Police with the Kirkersville Police Department for just about a month when he responded this morning to reports of an active gunman at a nursing home.

In responding to the call, Chief Disario exposed himself to danger in order to keep others safe. He was shot by the gunman and was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to those injuries.

Chief Disario gave his life for his community and for that we will be eternally grateful. The Fraternal Order of Police will work to ensure that his sacrifice is never forgotten. We ask that you join us in praying for Chief Disario’s family and the community as they heal from this tragedy."
