Welcome A critical incident may be defined as “Any event which has a stressful impact enough to overwhelm the usually effective coping skills of either an individual or a group.” They are typically sudden, powerful events which are outside the range of normal human experiences. Not all tragic events are critical incidents to first responders. While such sudden, powerful events have the potential to overwhelm even the extraordinary coping strategies of first responders, it is important to acknowledge that a critical incident can be “anything to anyone on any given day". Law enforcement is stressful and may have a strong impact on the health, both physical and mental, of personnel. Left unaddressed, impact from exposure to trauma and the cumulative effects of stress can impact one’s life in multiple ways. Mission CIRS is a consortium of Critical Incident Stress Management peer support teams throughout the state whose sole mission is to support first responders and assist them in navigating reactions and bridging to other resources when needed. The goal of peer support is to offer strategies for first responders that mitigate the impact of critical incident and cumulative stress to accelerate recovery and encourage post-traumatic growth. Access The service is available 24/7 by calling the Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-367-6524. Any first responder can request CIRS peer support.
