FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE RELEASES
FIRST STATEWIDE RADIO AD AGAINST ISSUE 2
COLUMBUS - This week, the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) launched its first statewide radio ad urging voters to vote 'NO' on Issue 2.
The FOP ad depicts a scene from the future where, if Issue 2 passes, a husband and wife face a home intruder and encounter a long wait for help to arrive, due to fewer police officers on duty.
The independent fact-finder Politifact has looked specifically at the question of whether Issue 2 would limit the right to negotiate the number of safety professionals on duty and found the claim to be accurate. Ohioans can review the full Politifact report at TinyUrl.com/CheckTheProof.
FOP President Jay McDonald says that the example in the radio ad is exactly what could result if voters pass Issue 2.
"The scenario in the radio ad is a chilling example of the real-world impact of fewer police officers on duty, McDonald said. "Politicians, not police officers, would be entrusted with making decisions on how many police officers are on duty to protect the public. If Issue 2 passes, it will literally be illegal for us to fight to have more officers on duty."
The ad prominently features retired police officer Pete Tobin. Tobin retired as the most decorated Columbus police officer in history and later was a top management official at the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Tobin says that Issue 2 comes down to arguments about how to keep Ohio communities safe.
"Issue 2 isn't about unions versus the private sector and it's not about Republicans versus Democrats," Tobin said. "It's about the safety of Ohio families and the ability of police to advocate for more cops on duty."
The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio is a 25,000-member organization that advocates for its members and public safety. Visit FOPOhio.org for more information.
